Get rid of uncomfortable vaginal itch

Why is my vagina itching?

If you’ve ever suffered from vaginal itch, you know that it’s an extremely aggravating and uncomfortable condition. Itchiness on the vulva and in the vagina is more common than you may think but many women still feel awkward talking about it. Vaginal itch could be due to any number of reasons, including infections, irritants and dryness. Depending on what’s causing your vagina to itch, there are readily available treatments that can help you get rid of the symptoms and prevent them from coming back.

What causes vaginal itching?

There are several causes of vaginal itch, some more common than others:

  • Yeast overgrowth. Yeast is caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans and is a very common cause of intense vaginal itch. That’s especially true for women who are pregnant, since hormone changes during pregnancy can throw off the pH balance of the vagina.
  • Allergens or irritants. Using latex condoms or perfumed hygiene products, detergents or douches can cause the vagina to become irritated and slightly itchy. Wearing synthetic underwear, having sex and riding horses or bikes can also cause chafing and itchiness in the vaginal area.
  • Dryness. When you enter menopause, give birth or breastfeed, your body’s estrogen levels tend to drop, which can make the lining of your vagina thinner, drier and less elastic. This is called vaginal atrophy and can cause the vagina to itch.

If you’re not sure why your vagina is itchy, call your doctor or health care centre. Identifying the cause of the problem is crucial to getting the right treatment, which is especially important if you’re pregnant.

Vaginal itching treatment

Apple cider vinegar, yogurt, tea tree oil, garlic, coconut oil…The internet abounds with purported home remedies for vaginal itch, but there’s really no evidence of their effectiveness. Some home remedies may even have the opposite effect, causing burning and irritation on the vulva and in the vagina. If you know that your itchiness is due to yeast problems, you can try addressing it with an over-the-counter product like Multi-Gyn FloraPlus.

How to help treat vaginal itching

Multi-Gyn FloraPlus is a prebiotic gel that promotes beneficial lactobacilli in the vagina and relieves troublesome itchiness and irritation caused by overgrowth of yeast in the vagina. You can use it to treat yeast problems and to promote a healthy microbial balance in your vaginal area, particularly when:

  • you’ve just had your period
  • you’ve had unprotected sex
  • you’re taking or have taken antibiotics
  • you’re having symptoms like itching, irritation and discharge

If you’re having problems with itch and want immediate relief, use the applicator to squeeze out a single dose of Multi-Gyn FloraPlus inside the vagina. To assist a yeast problem, repeat the application at bedtime for five consecutive days. Unlike traditional antifungal treatments for yeast, MultiGyn FloraPlus helps improve vaginal flora rather than disturbing it. If the problem persists after using the gel, contact your health professional.
